Hello, I am currently 5 and a half months pregnant and have been supplemented with folic acid since May 2014 in the form of a food supplement. At the start and until the first trimester I only took folic acid. Since the 4th month, I have been taking a special food supplement for pregnant women in which there is also folic acid. But now, the results of my blood tests revealed a high level of this vitamin in my blood:> 24ng / mL while the laboratory standard is 5.4 to 17. This vitamin is supposed to be water soluble, I do not understand too much in this case why am I in surplus?!?! I have to see my doctor next Monday, in the meantime, if anyone can tell me about the toxicity of this surplus in the body.
Thank you in advance,
“Vitamin B9 deficiencies:
impaired immunity, anemia ) can occur during unbalanced diets, low calorie or too restrictive diets. Excessive consumption of tobacco or alcohol may be involved.
The period of
pregnancy or breastfeeding is a risky period.
inflammatory bowel diseases can also be incriminated by the malabsorption they cause.
Blood measurements are only of relative value, since they do not fully reflect the status of the organism in folate
Dangers of overdose:
Neurological signs may appear, for excessive intakes of the order of approximately 1 mg / day “ .
Why does vitamin B9 increase the risk of eczema? Why do women who have taken 500 µg or more of vitamin B9 have children who have more eczema than others, the question is open, however it should be remembered that vitamin B9 as a dietary supplement is folic acid, a synthetic form. There are several reasons to believe that this form of vitamin B9 in high doses could have harmful effects. This point was the subject of a previous article:
Vitamins: natural or synthetic? .
